What installation really takes, platform by platform, and how to keep the catalogue up to date.

Most merchants have no developer. The real question is therefore not whether an assistant is intelligent, but whether it installs without touching code and stays in sync with the catalogue. Here is what that involves, platform by platform.

Key point

  • The three things to have ready
  • WooCommerce and PrestaShop
  • Shopify
  • A custom site, or a less common platform

The three things to have ready

  1. 1Administrator access to your shop, to install an extension or paste a tag.
  2. 2An up-to-date catalogue: clear titles, prices filled in, sold-out products removed or marked.
  3. 3An idea of the questions your buyers ask most often, so you can check the answers on day one.

WooCommerce and PrestaShop

These are the simplest cases, because both platforms accept extensions. You download the connector, upload it from your dashboard, paste two keys, and the catalogue goes across. From then on, every change made in the shop is reflected: a changed price, a removed product, a new reference.

That is the point that matters most over time. An assistant whose catalogue is copied once and then forgotten ends up offering items that no longer exist, and quoting stale prices.

Shopify

Shopify allows a script to be added to the shop. The assistant appears on every page, and the catalogue syncs on demand or on a loop depending on the setting. The logic is the same, with a slightly different set of steps.

A custom site, or a less common platform

There is always the universal route: a tag to paste into the page template, and a catalogue import from CSV or Excel. It is also the route to take when the shop is custom built. The import then has to be redone when the catalogue changes substantially, or automated if your site can export a file regularly.

The settings to make on day one

  • The delivery areas you actually serve, and the charges that go with them.
  • The welcome message, in your buyers' language.
  • What the assistant should do when it does not know: say so and pass the question to you.
  • The details to collect for an order: name, phone number, city.

The first week

Look every day at the questions left unanswered. They tell you two things: what your catalogue does not yet specify, and what your buyers are looking for without finding it. Fixing those two points does more for your sales than any assistant setting.
