A phone lying on a desk

More than 26 million Moroccans use WhatsApp. Your customers are there, and they already write to you there, on the personal number of the manager or a salesperson. Until that channel is organised, every message is a sale that depends on one person being available.

Key point

  • The symptom: the manager's phone
  • Three levels of organisation
  • What to decide before opening a business number
  • The mistakes that drive people away

The symptom: the manager's phone

In most small businesses, WhatsApp works like this: one personal number receives the orders, the questions, the complaints and the product photos. Nobody else sees those conversations. When that person is in a meeting, on leave or simply swamped, the customer waits, then looks elsewhere. And when they leave the company, the history leaves with them.

Three levels of organisation

First level: the WhatsApp Business app, free. A business profile, a catalogue, quick replies, an away message. Enough for a shop with one person answering.

Second level: the WhatsApp Business Platform (the API), available through an approved provider. Several agents on one number, a shared inbox, conversation assignment, customer history, statistics. Since July 2025 Meta charges per message sent according to its category, but replies within the 24-hour window after a customer message are free: a small business that answers more than it solicits pays Meta almost nothing.

Third level: the API connected to your systems. The agent, human or AI, can see the order, the invoice, the delivery. It answers “your parcel left this morning” without leaving the conversation. That is where WhatsApp becomes real customer service.

What to decide before opening a business number

  1. 1Who answers, at what hours, and what happens outside them: a holding message, an AI agent, nothing?
  2. 2Which requests can be handled without a human (order status, opening hours, prices) and which must be passed on (complaints, refunds)?
  3. 3In which languages: Moroccan customers write in Darija, Arabic and French, often in the same message.
  4. 4How consent is collected: law 09-08 applies to conversations, and the WhatsApp Business terms forbid soliciting without prior agreement.

The mistakes that drive people away

  • Answering with an automatic message that leads nowhere, with no way to reach a person.
  • Broadcasting promotions to contacts who never asked for them: beyond the irritation, it is a reason for Meta to block your number.
  • Leaving a conversation unanswered for more than a few hours during the day: on WhatsApp the customer expects a quick reaction, not an email turnaround.
  • Letting an AI agent answer without introducing itself as one. It is an obligation, and it does not stand in the way of satisfaction.

Measuring

Three indicators are enough: time to first reply, the share of conversations resolved without a human, and the most frequent topics. The third is the most useful: it tells you what your customers really ask, and what to fix on your site, your product pages or your delivery times.
